Weekly Update 13.10.23

K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog

The most exciting part of our week was the Great Fire of London workshop on Wednesday.

The children learnt how the fire started, why the fire spread so quickly and how the fire was eventually put out. Each child built and painted their own house on Pudding Lane. In the afternoon they watched the houses burn and were amazed at how quickly the fire spread. We discussed what we could see, hear and feel and then spoke about why it would not be possible for a fire to spread so quickly today.

In English we have started to learn about Samuel Pepys' diary and the children will be writing their own diaries next week. In maths we have continued learning about addition and have begun to find all the number bonds to numbers within 10.

Thank you to everyone who has booked a parents' consultation meeting for next week. I look forward to discussing your child's learning and progress with you.

Enjoy the weekend and I will see you again on Monday.

Weekly Update 6.10.23

The fifth week of the academic year has come to an end.

In phonics the children learnt how to read and write words containing the 'ie' digraph. The children went on a hunt around the classroom and created a list of the 'ie' words they found.

In PSHE the children learnt the difference between unkind behaviour and bullying and what to do if either of these happen to them.

In maths we introduced the concept of addition using the part whole model. The children remembered a lot about addition from their time in reception and began to write addition sums to match their practical work.

Next Wednesday (11.10.23) Year One have their Great Fire of London workshop. Thank you for all the cardboard box donations as we could not do the workshop without them.

You should have also received information about Parents' Evening and should have had the opportunity to book a 10 minute appointment with me to discuss how your child has settled into Year One. If you do not know how to book a parents' evening appointment, please speak to the office.

Enjoy the weekend and see you again on Monday.

Weekly Update 29.9.23

Another busy week has come to an end.

In English the children learnt about how to describe a setting from 'Katie in London'. We pretended to go on a boat trip down the river Thames and the children wrote a description about what they could see and hear from the boat. The children practised writing on whiteboards and then wrote their full descriptions into their English books.

In art, we have continued to explore different materials. The children experimented with how to blend different colours using chalk.

In maths we have continued to learn about numbers 0-10. The children learnt to compare two numbers within 10 using the key vocabulary of 'greater than', 'less than' and 'equal to'. The children also learnt how to put numbers in order from smallest to largest.

Enjoy the weekend I will see you again on Monday.
