Weekly Update 5.5.23

K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog

In English this week the children have enjoyed imaging what Jim Lad, from 'The Pirates Next Door' would do if he attended Rufford Park Primary School for the day. There were some imaginative ideas, including bringing his pirate dog 'Bones' to school and making some teachers walk the plank!

In maths we have continued working on addition and subtraction and understanding the relationship between these two operations.

The children have enjoyed learning about King Charles today and wearing red, white and blue in celebration of the coronation. We discussed what the coronation ceremony will look like as well as the symbolism of the items involved in the ceremony and chronologically ordered key events from King Charles's life.

Here's a link to a video if you would like to look at a child-appropriate coronation video at home:

Enjoy another Bank Holiday Weekend!

Weekly Update 28.4.23

In English the children wrote letters explaining why The Jolly Rogers from 'The Pirates Next Door' should be made to leave Dull on Sea, due to their behaviour. The children are all enjoying the story and are making good progress with their writing.

In maths we have recapped how to solve subtraction number sentences and have continued using the bar model as a tool to solve subtraction problems. We have also started to learn our left and right. Any time spent at home helping your child to learn their left and right would be greatly appreciated. In school we have been using the tactic of the left forefinger and thumb making a capital L shape, to remind the children that this is their left hand.

In science the children have started to learn how animals are grouped according to whether they are a mammal, bird, fish, reptile or amphibian. Today the children sorted different animals into these categories. Again, conversations about different animals and how they are categorised would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, in our topic of 'Explorer's we have started to learn the names of the seven continents. We used the atlas to label our own world map. We have been singing this song to help us learn the names of the continents: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6DSMZ8b3LE

Enjoy the weekend.

Weekly Update 21.4.23

K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog

We have had a wonderful first week back in Pear Tree Class.

In English we have started reading our new class text 'The Pirates Next Door' by Jonny Duddle. The children wrote a recount from the main character's point of view. The quality of writing was very high with most children working independently and remembering to read back every sentence to check it made sense.

In maths we have recapped how to solve addition number problems by counting on using the number line and spoken about how it is quicker to start on the bigger number. We have also introduced the bar model as a way of adding two numbers together.

In computing we have started learning what a robot is and later this half term we will be learning about algorithms and programming. The children all got an opportunity to tinker with the BeeBots.

In history we learnt about Christopher Columbus and discussed the positive and negative impacts of his discovery of America. This half term our history topic is 'Explorers' and we will be learning about a different explorer each week.

Have a lovely weekend and I'll see you again on Monday,

Miss Atkinson
