Weekly Update 10.11.23

K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog

We have had a busy first week back!

In English we have started reading the story 'Where the Wild Things Are'. The children wrote sentences using key vocabulary from the story and also described one of the wild things.

In maths we have continued learning about how to add numbers within 10. The children began the week by telling 'first, then and now' stories to match pictures, (for example; first there were three flowers in the garden, then two more grew and now there are five flowers) and then progressed to solving addition sums by counting on using the number line.

In art the children created their own collage inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian.

As discussed at parents' evening, we are now going to be setting weekly maths or English homework, alongside the weekly phonics sheets. Homework will be sent home on Friday and needs to be completed and returned to school by the following Thursday. Phonics sheets do not need to be returned to school.

Our PE days have also changed and will now be Tuesday and Friday. Please make sure your child comes to school in their PE kit on these days.

Enjoy the weekend and I will see you again on Monday,

Miss Atkinson

Weekly Update 27.10.23

The first half term of Year One has come to an end!

This week in English the children finished writing their diary entries as Samuel Pepys.

In maths we recapped that the equals symbol can mean 'the same as' and used the weighing scales to check the answers to some of our addition number sentences.

We also continued learning about number bonds by finding all the ways of making 10.

In art the children created their own Great Fire of London silhouette painting by blending red, orange and yellow to make a fiery background and then cutting the silhouettes of London landmarks out of black card.

As mentioned at parents' evening, homework will start being set after the October holiday. The homework will be sent home on a Friday and will need to be completed and returned to school on the following Thursday. If you have any questions about this, please email the Pear Tree email address at: pear@ruffordparkprimary.org.uk

All the children have done so well in transitioning from reception to year one. This is one of the most difficult transitions in school and the children all seem well settled with the Key Stage One expectations and routines.

I hope you and your children enjoy the October half term holidays and I will see you again on Monday 6th November.

Weekly Update 20.10.23

We have learnt so much this week in Pear Tree Class!

In maths we have recapped our number bonds to 6, 7, 8 and 9. The children learnt their number bonds to these numbers in reception and I am impressed at how much they remembered. We have also spent some time looking at repeating patterns and learning what would come next in a repeating pattern.

In English we learnt what a diary is and had a go at writing a diary entry from the point of view of Samuel Pepys.

As part of our history topic we looked at what happened after The Great Fire of London and how London was rebuilt to ensure that a fire would not be able to spread in the same way again.

Next week as part of our English lessons we are going to be learning the poem 'Buckingham Palace' by A. A. Milne. A copy of this poem has been sent home today so your child can start learning this in advance of our lessons next week.

Enjoy the weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday for the last week before the half term break!
