Weekly Update 18.12.20

Mrs Trotter (l.trotter) on: Maple Tree Class Blog 2020/2021

Wow! What a busy end to the term. Year 6 have been busy enjoying the Christmas festivities. On Tuesday, they had a great time at their Christmas party. We managed several games of Musical Statues and Corners followed by crisps, chocolate and juice. On Wednesday, we all enjoyed watching the online pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk and even managed some audience participation. Everyone has also had the opportunity to learn to play Jingle Bells on the chime bars.

We are all ready for a restful break now. Have a lovely Christmas and keep safe.

Year 6 have worked really hard completing a range of assessments this week. They have shown a mature approach to this and it has been pleasing to see the progress they have made since September.

We are all looking forward to the Christmas celebrations next week: the Christmas party (Tuesday afternoon), watching the pantomime and making Christmas cards and other festive fun. Our classroom was very colourful this morning with an amazing selection of Christmas jumpers.

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly Update 4.12.20

Year 6 have completed their persuasive letters regarding the proposed closure of Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre. They have focussed well on this task and produced some excellent results. To support  our persuasive campaign, Year 6 has also produced some posters which will be placed in classroom windows.

We continue to enjoy reading the novel 'Goodnight Mr Tom', which is helping our vocabulary to develop further.

In maths, we have been adding and subtracting mixed numbers. This has involved converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and improper fractions into mixed numbers. I have been delighted with the confidence with which the children are approaching their work and the enjoyment they are experiencing from completing more challenging tasks. Next week, we will be completing some assessment work that will help us to identify are areas of focus in the New Year.

The snow created much excitement in Year 6 this morning. Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly Update 27.11.20

Another busy week in Year 6.

In English , we are developing the use of persuasive language and have completed our first draft of a letter to be sent to Leeds City Council to express our concerns about the proposed closure of Leeds Sailing Club. We have discussed how this will affect both the children in Year 6 and the wider Leeds community. I was impressed that  a number of children in the class prepared for this writing activity by completing their first draft at home over the longer weekend, last week.

In maths, we are beginning to apply our knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions to more complex problems, which we are now able to explain by using a wide range of mathematical vocabulary. A quick recall of times tables really helps with fractions.

We are beginning to think about Christmas so our Christmas tree will shortly be arriving to brighten up our class.

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly Update 20.11.20

Mrs Trotter (l.trotter) on: Maple Tree Class Blog 2020/2021

A short but busy week in Year 6 Maple Tree Class.

In English, we completed our character descriptions. Everyone worked really hard to include a fantastic range of vocabulary, whilst developing their understanding of adjectives and adverbs.

We were planning to move onto setting descriptions but an important local matter has resulted in us changing our focus over the next week. We discovered that Leeds Sailing Club in Yeadon is under threat of possible closure. This is a valuable community resource and Year 6 always spends part of the summer term enjoying the range of activities that are on offer there.

As a result, Year 6 will be putting their excellent writing skills to use and writing persuasive letters to Leeds City Council to oppose this closure. Watch this space for the results next week!

In maths, we continue to focus on fractions and will moving onto adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators. It has also been great to see everyone focussed on becoming increasingly accurate in their methods of arithmetic.

Enjoy the long weekend.
