Weekly Update 21.10.2022

K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog

This half-term has gone by so quickly! All the children seem settled at school and have already made good progress since the start of the year. As mentioned at Parent's Evening, homework will start being set after October half-term.

Over the past few weeks we have begun our history topic of 'Fighting Fit' and have started learning about Florence Nightingale. We will continue this topic after the holidays. So far the children have been very enthusiastic about this topic and should be able to tell you some facts about Florence Nightingale.

On Wednesday all the children performed the poem 'Caterpillar' by Christina Rosetti off by heart to Lime Tree Class and Cherry Tree Class. I was very impressed with how the children remembered all the words to the poem and spoke clearly for the other children to hear. After the holidays we will be learning the poem 'Now We Are Six' by A. A. Milne

In phonics the children have learnt about their first split digraph 'a_e'. The children worked together to read and sort words into those spelt with the 'ay', 'ai' and 'a_e' digraphs.

All the children have also designed their own Christmas Card which will be available for purchase. The money from these cards will go to the school. Details about how to preview and order these cards will be coming next half term.

I hope you and your family have an enjoyable week and I will see you again on Monday 31st October.

Weekly Update 14.10.2022

K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog

Another busy week has come to an end. It was lovely to get a chance to talk to all of you at Parent's Evening and tell you about how well the children have settled into Year One. Just a reminder, please make sure that jumpers, cardigans and PE hoodies are labelled. We have had a few pieces of clothing get mixed up this week and it is very hard to return things to the rightful owner if they are not labelled.

In maths the children have continued to explore addition and have used the Numicon to write different addition sums. We have also introduced the number bonds to 10 and the children have enjoyed playing 'Hit the Button' - an online maths game which you can find here: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

In science we have learnt about different world habitats and discussed the plants and animals that live in the desert, arctic, rainforest and ocean.

In English the children have all written their own onomatopoeia poem inspired by 'What the Ladybird Heard'. You can find a range of poems to listen to here: https://childrens.poetryarchive.org/

Enjoy the weekend and I will see you all again on Monday.

Weekly Update 7.10.1022

K Atkinson (k.atkinson) on: Pear Tree Class Blog

It has felt like a more autumnal week in Pear Tree Class this last week. We have had a lot of conversations about seasonal changes and the children have enjoyed showing signs of autumn that they have found.

In maths this week we have introduced the concept of addition using the part-whole model. Children have completed a lot of practical work and have been using the part-whole model to represent, solve and write addition number sentences.

In computing the children have continued learning about the keyboard and the mouse on a computer and how to use these successfully.

One of our favourite lessons of the week was science. We have been learning about minibeasts and their microhabitats. Every child made their own minibeast out of clay and painted their own microhabitat using a shoebox. Once the weather is a bit drier we will be collecting sticks and leaves to add to our microhabitats.

We will be electing our School Council next week. If your child would like to stand as the Pear Class representative they need to make a poster ready to share in class on Thursday 13th October about why the class should vote for them and why they would be a good school council representative. Hopefully we get lots of posters!

I look forward to seeing you all on Parents' Evening next week and hope you have a fantastic weekend,

Miss Atkinson
