Weekly Update 24.11.23

Miss Cotterill (e.cotterill) on: Lime Tree Class Blog

Hello!

Another week has flown by as we are nearly at the half way point in Autumn 2.

The children have continued to enjoy our Art this week and learning about famous artists. We have been mixing colours with white, this week, to create 'tints'. The children used these tints to create a 'Paul Klee' inspired picture.

In English we have been describing the setting of the island where the Wild Things live. We have used our senses to imagine the things that we might see, hear, feel and smell. Next week we will be starting our new focus 'fantasy' text!

In Maths Year 1 have been looking at subtraction using the part-whole model and finding the difference. Year 2 have continued to add multiples of 10 to a 2-digit number. We have also started to look at adding pairs of 2-digit numbers where there is no crossing of the tens.

The children in Year 2 should all have taken their lines for the Christmas play home with them today. Their homework is to practise their lines. Your help with this is very much appreciated! Year 1 will be told their parts and will start practising their dances next week.

I look forward to seeing some of you at the Christmas Fayre on Saturday!

Weekly Update 16.11.23

Miss Cotterill (e.cotterill) on: Lime Tree Class Blog

Hello!

A slightly shorter week for us this week with Friday being a a training day.

We have had a very busy week with Odd Socks day for anti-bullying on Tuesday and Children in Need non-uniform day on Thursday!

In English we have moved on to retelling the story of 'Where The Wild Things are'. We started by sequencing pictures from the story. Then as a whole class we created a 'Talk for Writing' story map which the children used to help them verbally retell the story. Once the children were secure on the order of events they had a go at rewriting the story.   *Retelling Where The Wild Things Are*

In Maths Year 1 have been introduced to the subtraction symbol (-) and have been looking at how a part-whole model can help them solve subtraction number sentences. They have also been looking at fact families and the relationship between 3 numbers to create addition and subtraction number sentences. Year 2 have been adding across 10 by partitioning to find 10 first (or drawing representation). They have also been looking at 100 squares to find 10 more and 10 less than a given number.

In Science we started our new topic which is about everyday materials and their uses. We explored and named a variety of different materials in and outside of the classroom. In Topic we looked in to the life of artist Paul Klee. We looked at where he was born and where he lived. The children used their atlas' to locate Switzerland in Europe. In Art we focused on the work of Mark Rothko. The children explored blending red, yellow and blue paint (the primary colours) together to recreate some of his work. In PE we have been playing OAA games which is all about team work and listening skills.

The preparations for our Christmas Play have begun this week. We have started listening and practising the songs so you may hear a few new songs being sung in your homes. We have a brand new play this year which has never performed in school before! We are all very excited :)

There is only 1 week until our Christmas Fayre... Any donation are greatly appreciated!

Have a lovely weekend!

Weekly Update 10.11.23

Miss Cotterill (e.cotterill) on: Lime Tree Class Blog

Hello!

It was great to welcome so many smiling faces back on Monday. We have had a good week in Lime Tree.

In English this half term we are looking at Fantasy Stories. Our focus text for the next few weeks is 'Where the Wild Things Are'. This week we have been making predictions and writing a description about one of the Wild Things. The children have been using adjectives and expanded noun phrases in their descriptive sentences.

In Maths Year 1 have been looking at the different practical resources we can use to help us when solving addition number sentences. Today the children had to choose the resource (tens frames, part-whole model or number line) that they are most confident with to solve lots of addition problems. Year 2 have continued to work on addition and subtraction. They have been adding by making 10 and adding to the next 10. This week's homework is reinforcing this learning. Any recapping on quick recall of number bonds to 10 and 20 at home would be amazing!

Our topic this half term is called Colour Chaos and is linked to our Art. We will be going into an artist time machine and learning all about them and their Art. Our first lesson was about Pier Mondrian and we focused on the use of primary colours when creating a Mondrian style mosaic.

In Science we did a one off lesson about the seasons and the season of Autumn which we are in now. We went on an Autumn walk and looked for all the signs of this season. We also discussed how the hours of daylight and the temperature has changed.

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly Update 27.10.23

Hello!

We have made it to the end of our first half term!

We have had a lovely final week in Lime Tree. Everyone has really impressed me with their Samuel Pepys diary entries about the Great Fire of London. There was some super use of the facts that we have learnt.

In Maths Year 1 have been working on number bonds to 10 and how to find them systematically with the use of tens frames. Year 2 have been adding and subtracting 1's from a 2-digit number with the support of base 10.

In PE we put our throwing and catching skills in to practice by playing team games. It was great to see just how much the children's skills have developed over this unit.

Thank you to everyone who put in the time to practise our Buckingham Palace poem at home. Today all the classes in KS1 performed the poem to each other and then sang London's burning in a round.

We have finished the week with some Halloween stencil printing and golden time. I think everyone is ready for a rest now!

Have a lovely week and I will see you on Monday 6th November :)

Weekly Update 20.10.23

Hello!

We have been very busy this week with more Great Fire of London learning. On Tuesday we had a special box delivered to Lime Tree Class. Inside the box was Samuel Pepys’ diary about the Great Fire of London. We read his diary entries together and highlighted the Important features: The date/time, written in first person, time words, in order, past tense and includes feelings. We also transformed ourselves in to Samuel Pepys and thought tracked how we would feel during the fire. Next week we will be writing our own diary entries in character.

For our Topic lesson we looked at what happened after the fire and how London was rebuilt differently.

In Science we looked at the importance of personal hygiene. The children were able to share lots of examples of personal hygiene and why it is needed.

In Art we finished our Great Fire of London silhouette painting - they look really effective and will be going on display for the rest of the school to see.

In Maths Year 1 have been working on bonds to 7, 8 and 9 using numicon. Year 2 have been looking at related facts and number bonds to 100.

Have a lovely weekend.
