Cedar Week 4 Spring 1 w/e 02.02.24

Mr Dring (p.dring) on: Cedar Tree Class

Hello

We have had a fun and exciting week with the children particularly enthused about their English poetry unit - Haiku poems. These follow a strict 3 line, 5-7-5 syllable pattern and we have been happily clapping to work out which words about Spring we can use to fit the pattern. The children were fascinated to also learn about blossoms, tree buds and catkins. The children have said they still find using apostrophes for possession tricky so I have attached a link below in case your child asks you for further help at home.

Year 3 and 4 English Apostrophes

In Science, we used petri dishes to look at different soil types up close in detail and learnt why soil is so importance to humanity. In DT we have made our final designs ready for bread making next week!

In Maths we have been measuring and I don't think there is anything left in the classroom that has gone unmeasured! Year 3 have focussed on equivalent measures e.g 10mm=1cm, cm=m etc and Year 4 applying that knowledge to calculate perimeters (see links below).

In Computing we have finished our unit about how to stay safe online and be a good digital citizen. A few reminders for parents to support your child at home when online are below with more to follow next week.

  • Year 4 residential - thank you to all of those who could attend our meeting on Thursday after school. All of the links and information shared is below. We have been asked questions about packed food mostly. On the Tuesday we go, please provide your child with a packed lunch that they will eat on arrival at the centre. If you need school to provide one as part of the Free School Meals initiative, please contact school as soon as possible so we can arrange it. All other meals will be provided by school during the residential. Please return the final medical confirmation letter handed out last night as soon as possible please (even if it's for e.g Calpol etc). If you need another copy - please ask the office who will provide you a copy. Thank you.

Apologies if you received a letter with an incorrect date on - I've attached the correct dated letter below.

Cedar Week 3 Spring 1 w.e 26.01.24

Mr Dring (p.dring) on: Cedar Tree Class

Hello

Welcome to our Week 3 blog. This week we have been busy drafting and publishing our assessed piece of writing which is a character description of our own fictional animals (ranging from Octophants, Dirgs through to Snorses)! We have loved using our imaginations.

In Geography we have begun exploring the continent of Asia and our case study on India. The numbers involved have amazed us for example the size of the country and population.

In Science we have investigated observing different soils types and learning how to define which we had in our beakers. In D.T we have practised using play-doh a mini Great British Bake Off and learnt how to plait, stretch, roll and know dough.

A few children have unfortunately been under the weather recently. Please can I remind you that all medicines (even if not prescribed e.g. cough sweets) must come into school via the school office to ensure school medicine protocols can be followed to ensure your child and their friends are kept safe.

Year 4s please be aware of the below about Nell Bank residential and the compulsory government times table check 2024:

Cedar Week Week 2 w/e 19.01.24

Mr Dring (p.dring) on: Cedar Tree Class

Hello

This week I am really happy with the children's enthusiasm for their learning and we have had some great class discussions. We have continued to practise our descriptive writing skills and have now created our own fictional animal descriptions. In Maths we have moved onto measuring in mm, cm, km and finding their equivalents. The children loved their Warburton's Design and Technology lesson this week when they got to sample some of their products.

Year 4  - you will have already received the letter below this week inviting you to the Parent Briefing Meeting on Thursday 1st February where you and your child will get chance to 'see' virtually inside the Nell Bank facilities and be able to ask any questions you might still have about our exciting residential opportunity.

Cedar Week 1 Spring 1 w.e 12.01.24

Mr Dring (p.dring) on: Cedar Tree Class

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to our learning this Spring half term. We have been busy learning about writing detailed, entertaining character descriptions of a fictional animal, how to use partitioning to answer division questions in Maths (see more resources below) and the history of Warburtons as part of our bread Design and Technology unit. In P.E we have started to develop our skipping skills and the Year 4 children have been honing their skipping skills ready for the April inter-school Skipping Festival they will be participating in.

Cedar wk 7 Aut 2 w.e 22.12.23

Mr Dring (p.dring) on: Cedar Tree Class

Good afternoon

What another fabulous week with the children. I am so proud how resilient they have been with the 15 week Autumn term this year and how they have adapted to changes to routines for example our Christmas assembly practice. Right until the end the children, as part of their British Value - the  Democratic right to vote, the children have chosen to practise their times tables. Well done everyone.

Thank you for your generous comments, cards and/or gifts - I and the LKS2 team are very humbled and would like to say a huge thank you.

Below you should see the results of our kite skills. Most children focused initially on criticising their chosen colours/design on the sail but when we all refocused on the technology part, they soon realised how successful they had been in developing /applying their sawing skills etc. As we still don't have confirmed permissions from every child in class we have decided to cover everyone's faces to allow us to make sure we could share every child's success with you. Unfortunately, the storm meant we were not able to practise flying them.

Swimming - will recommence the second Friday back in 2024 so the Year 4 children will need to bring ordinary P.E. kit the first week back on Friday.

P.E.  - all children our usual P.E. days will be Wednesday and Friday in 2024.

Have a great, fun and restful Christmas and I look forward to welcoming you back in 2024!

Mr Dring
