Weekly Update 24.2.23

Mrs Trotter (l.trotter) on: Maple Tree Class Blog

Hi,

A super start to the half-term!

The children have enjoyed completing their geographical learning on rainforests this week. Working in groups, they researched different elements to life in the Amazon rainforest (people, animals, plants, food and fun facts). Working as 'expert' groups they researched and created a poster with information. Next week, they will share this information with their 'home group'. Recalling and sharing information will develop skills in retaining relevant facts.

Also to support understanding of issues connected with rainforests, the children have been learning about palm oil and the products it is used in. Next week, they will be writing a balanced argument to discuss the pros and cons of using palm oil and the links to deforestation.

On a beautiful, sunny afternoon everyone enjoyed their introduction to playing hockey. I was very impressed with how quickly the children's skills developed throughout the lesson.

A note went out to parents about the Year 6 Peat Rigg Residential parents' meeting this week. The meeting will be held in Maple Tree Classroom (Y6) on Tuesday 14th March from 15:30 - 16:00. The children do not need to attend this meeting as they will see the information in class. Please do not worry if you are unable to attend as all information will be on the website and paper copies of information and kit lists will be sent home with the children.

Have a lovely weekend

Weekly Update 10.2.23

Mrs Trotter (l.trotter) on: Maple Tree Class Blog

Hi,

Well - this half-term has flown by!

It has been lovely catching up with parents and children during the parents' evenings this week. It was great to share the progress that the children have been making and speak about the forthcoming residential in April.

In class, the children have been completing a range of assessments this week. They have shown maturity and focus and have enjoyed seeing the progress they have made since September. Just a reminder, that regularly reading to an adult at home is important, as is securing a quick recall of all times tables facts.

It was also Safer Internet Day on Wednesday. We regularly talk about issues concerning online safety with the children as part of our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum. A link for parents and carers is included below for parents and carers.

The next few months are particularly packed for Year 6 so be ready for a busy time when we return after the holiday!

Have a super break!

Weekly Update 3.2.23

Mrs Trotter (l.trotter) on: Maple Tree Class Blog

Hello,

Maple Tree class have enjoyed developing their creative writing skills this week; they have been using features such as rhyme, similes, metaphors and personification to write their own version of a poem about the rainforest. I have been impressed how the children have identified particular features and then adapted these to create their own. A love of poetry is being found!

We have also been developing precise reading comprehension skills by analysing short texts and finding evidence to answer a variety of different questions. To help to develop those skills, children should be regularly reading to an adult at home so understanding of both particular vocabulary and general understanding is checked.

UKS2 also commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day by each adding an individual flame to an UKS2 memorial flame.

In PE, the children worked on their football attacking and defending skills.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Trotter
