Weekly Update 7.5.21

Mrs. Cahill (n.cahill) on: Beech Tree Class Blog 2020-21

Welcome back to the blog everyone,

It's been another busy week in Beech!

In Maths we have continued to develop our place value and decimal skills by ordering and comparing amounts of money. Here we are consolidating our skills by playing some games...

For English, we were initially disappointed to hear that we had not persuaded Mr Cooke enough to let us on the trim trail...HOWEVER... he gave us a second chance. After looking at excellent examples and improving our work, we have sent him our final drafts to look over. Hopefully next week we will find out if we have been successful!

We also spent some of our Friday creating some 'positive postcards' to send to elderly residents of nearby care homes.

If your child has mislaid their homework summary, it can be downloaded here. Please get in touch if you have any questions.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Cahill

Weekly Update 30.4.21

Mrs. Cahill (n.cahill) on: Beech Tree Class Blog 2020-21

Hello everyone,

First, I just wanted to say that it was lovely to chat to you all throughout the week about the academic progress of the children, their wellbeing and how they've settled back in since schools have reopened.

It's been another busy week! Here are some highlights...

The children have been working extremely hard on their persuasive leaflets that revolve around a Mary Anning theme park. They've included some brilliant rhetorical questions, lots of expanded noun phrases and imperative verbs. I am very proud of their efforts. Below are some examples of the fantastic work that has been produced. I've definitely been persuaded to go to all these theme parks.

In Science this week, the children used their knowledge of sound and hearing to create their own TV episode! Working in groups, they used different scientific vocabulary like vibrations, sound waves, particles, cochlea and eardrum to teach others how sound travels. Some even performed theirs at the end!

Finally, well done to the children for working so hard on their class target of 'being ready to listen and learn' - they are moving towards their reward at speed!

Have a super long weekend and take care,

Mrs Cahill

Weekly Update 23.4.21

Mrs. Cahill (n.cahill) on: Beech Tree Class Blog 2020-21

Hello and welcome back!

We have now entered the Summer term and the weather is really making it feel so! We got straight back into working hard in all of our subjects..

In English we looked at a variety of leaflets to learn about persuasive language. (WARNING: The children may try to use their new persuasive skills on you this weekend... e.g. to ask for ice-creams or a later bedtime!)

In maths we've been revising fractions and learning about the place value of decimal numbers.

For guided reading, we explored the first chapter of the brilliant Stig of the Dump, by Clive King.

In PSHE, we have been looking at safe and unsafe situations. We discussed where on a line we would put different situations and what we could do to make them safer. This is part of our new SCARF syllabus.

If your child has mislaid their homework summary, it can be downloaded here. Please get in touch if you have any questions.

Have a lovely weekend.

Weekly Update 1.4.21 from Mrs Cahill and Mrs Waddilove-Carr

Mrs. Cahill (n.cahill) on: Beech Tree Class Blog 2020-21

This is the final blog from rather strange term but how lovely that we all got to end it together (and even the sun came out).

On Monday the children practised their netball skills in PE they were learning how to shoot the ball, they split off into teams and had a shoot off to see which team could score the most points.

On Tuesday we took part in a real-life fossil hunt, inspired by palaeontologist Mary Anning. The children managed to identify a variety of ancient fossils - many of which were millions of years old - including ammonites, gastropods, shark teeth, crinoids and many others. After collecting the fossils, we sold them in our 'shop’.

We have been making volcanos this week, in groups the children used mod rock to construct their model of a volcano. On Wednesday the children used vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to explode their finished pieces. The lava came flowing out of the top to the chorus of screams and excitement.

We’ve ended the week dressing up in clothes that make us happy and we have had a lovely last day. I hope you all have a great Easter holiday, stay safe and hopefully we’ll get some nice weather.

Mrs Waddilove-Carr

Weekly Update 26.3.21

Mrs. Cahill (n.cahill) on: Beech Tree Class Blog 2020-21

Hello everyone,

This week we've been working hard to complete several important assessments in English and maths - the results of which will inform teaching throughout the Summer term.

We've also had lots of fun too! We enjoyed developing our netball skills in PE and had our 'Investors in Pupils' class reward for remembering to put our hands up.

On Friday afternoon, we started building our explosive volcanoes out of newspaper and modroc. We will complete these next week! Pictures to follow...

Please click here if you need an extra copy of this week's homework summary.

Don't forget, your child has also been assigned weekly tasks to complete at www.mathletics.co.uk as part of their homework - these will appear automatically when they log in. Please get in touch if you can't find your child's password in the back of their reading record.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Cahill
