Weekly Update 18.6.21

Mrs. Cahill (n.cahill) on: Beech Tree Class Blog 2020-21

Welcome back to the blog!

We have had a busy week this week...

Year 4 took part in the Multiplication Tables Check (a SATs-style government assessment of times tables recall), and I was very impressed with how much they've improved since September.

In English we developed our comprehension skills using our excellent class reader, Stig of the Dump, and have been working on our grammar skills. Can your child remember the difference between a noun, verb, adjective, adverb and preposition?

In maths we have moved on to angle work (not angel work as many children thought!) and have been identifying, comparing and ordering acute, right and obtuse angles. Here is our practical lesson on finding right angles within our environment...

In science we set up our plant investigation with the question "Can a sunflower grow in the dark?" and our prediction is "no" because plants need light to grow.

On Friday afternoon we enjoyed producing our own cave paintings. Pictures to follow on next week's post!

If your child did not receive a copy of the weekly homework, you can download a summary here.

Have a lovely weekend!

Weekly Update 11.6.21

Mrs. Cahill (n.cahill) on: Beech Tree Class Blog 2020-21

Hello everyone,

The children have settled back into school life well following the half-term break. Our assemblies this week have been about developing resilience - a crucial skill inside and outside the classroom.

In English, we have been learning to write instructions! We have been looking closely at key features and how to make them more detailed (and therefore more helpful!). The children found it hilarious when they instructed me to walk around the classroom but I kept bumping into things...they learned very quickly how accurate they needed to be!

In Maths, we have been looking at statistics; we collected our own data into a tally chart and converted it to a bar chart. Next week, we will be beginning to revise angles.

From next Monday (14th), the children will not be taking part in an extra PE session on Monday so they can come in normal school uniform. We had this extra session to fit in a skipping project but now this is over, the children will be doing PE on Thursdays and Fridays only.

Next week, Year 4 will be taking part in the Multiplication Tables Check - a SATs-style government test aimed at assessing children's recall of times tables up to x12. Please see the note that went home on Friday for more information. Any extra practice children can carry out over the weekend would be a big help. They will answer 25 questions online with only 6 seconds per question. Children can practise here

If you did not receive the weekly homework sheet, you can download a summary here.

Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

Take care,

Mrs Cahill

Weekly Update 28.5.21

Hello everyone,

It's been a fun and productive week leading up to 'Make the Rules Day' and our half-term holiday!

In maths we've been consolidating our learning on telling the time. It is one of those topics that many children find tricky so if your child is one of them, please do some additional practice over the break. Every little bit helps!

In English we wrote an instruction text for building a den in the Stone Age - inspired by our trip to Nell Bank.

We have worked very hard on our 'Investors in Pupils' target to be ready to listen and learn. Our treat was to watch a film...the one we chose fitted in very well with our new topic!

Group two will start their weekly swimming sessions on the first week back after half term. If your child is expected to return for additional swimming sessions, a letter will be given out in the first week back.

Have a lovely half term break,

Mrs Cahill, Mrs Waddilove-Carr and Miss Sanderson

Weekly Update 21.5.21

Hello everyone,

This week's highlight was undoubtedly our trip to the award-winning Nell Bank centre in Ilkley! As a brilliant hook for our new topic (Stone Age to Iron Age), activities included den building, making fires, cave painting, basket weaving, an artefacts session and learning about the chronology of early history. We were incredibly lucky with the weather and all had a fantastic time! I have to also add that behaviour was exceptional so an extra well done to the children is in order. The experiences we gained on the trip will feed into this term's learning back at school.

Massive thanks to everyone at Nell Bank, all our LKS2 staff and our parent volunteers for making this happen... as I'm sure you can imagine, running school trips in the current climate is a huge challenge, but extremely beneficial to the children's learning and wellbeing.

Have a lovely weekend,

Weekly Update 14.5.21

Welcome back to the blog!

Beech Tree Class have had another exciting and busy week..

SUCCESS! Our final draft persuasive letters were effective and the children enjoyed some time on the trim trail. We were so delighted with our hard work that many of use chose to put our letters on the 'wall of fame' display.

In English, we continued our work on persuasive writing. We worked together to create adverts and aimed to persuade the rest of the class to buy our products!

In maths, we have been consolidating our money skills. This includes word problems, estimating and rounding amounts, adding, subtracting, finding change and solving reasoning problems.

This afternoon, we will also be creating some art in nature as part of Mental Health Awareness week. Mental and physical health is woven throughout our lessons and ethos within our school but it will be lovely to put some specific time aside to look after ourselves and engage in our natural world! For more ideas or resources, please follow this link: https://www.coramlifeeducation.org.uk/mental-health-week-ideas-for-all-schools .

Thank you for all of the Nell Bank permission slips we have already had. If you have not handed it in, please do so ASAP as our trip is next Wednesday (19th May)!

Take care,

Mrs Cahill
