Weekly Update - 24.10.25
Posted: Oct 24, 2025 by: Miss Bairstow (d.bairstow) on: Maple Tree Class Blog
Hello,
We made it! Our first and longest half term of the year is officially over! We have had a great first 8 weeks settling into life in Year 6.
This week in English we have starting looking at onomatopoeia sounds to describe our visit to Armley Mills so that we can write some mill inspired poetry after half term.
In Maths, Miss Bairstow's group have been looking at different ways to complete mental calculations and completed an assessment on everything we have learnt so far on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Mrs Trotter's group have been looking at multiples and common multiples.
In Topic, we put all of our learning together to create some fantastic "JIGSAW" work (the children split into different groups to research a different aspect of Victorian child labour and we presented our findings at the end). Maple Tree worked brilliantly in their small groups and created some fantastic work as a result.
In Guided Reading this week, we read an information text all about the fiction genre "Victorian Gothic" (topic related and a slightly spooky Halloween theme!). We learnt about famous texts from this genre such as Frankenstein and Dracula, and since then I have had lots of requests to increase the "horror" section of the school library!
In assembly this week Mr Dring spoke about the importance of staying safe on Bonfire night, have a wonderful half term and enjoy any celebrations but please come back safely after the holidays!
Miss Bairstow :)
