Ash Tree Class Blog 2020-2021

Weekly Update 18.6.21

Miss Bairstow (d.bairstow) on: Ash Tree Class Blog 2020-2021

Hello!

It is all systems go at the moment in UKS2!

This week, we had our first read through of the Year 6 Leavers' Production with all the Year 6's together and allocated parts. We only have a few weeks until the performance date so please ensure if your child has a speaking part that they begin practising their lines ASAP!

Whilst Year 6 were rehearsing, the Year 5's made the most of the lovely weather by completing some sketching outdoors.

We have also had a big push on our class text "Darwin's Dragons" this week. We desperately want to finish the book before the end of term so every spare moment has been spent reading! It has been lovely to discuss with the children their opinions on the book so far and how it compares to our last class text. Yesterday, we discussed similarities and differences between this text and others that we have read and it was really interesting to get the children's feedback. We also had a class vote and every single member of Ash Tree said that they are enjoying the book so far - result! It is so important we have time for these discussions about reading so if you would like to ask your child about the text over the weekend and test them on their summarising skills that would present them with a fantastic opportunity to discuss their reading with someone who hasn't read the book.

I have also noticed a great improvement in the children's writing over the last few weeks due to their super vocabulary choices linked directly to Darwin's Dragons. We are going to start including a new feature on the blog called "Word of the Week" and the first one goes to...

Ben for correct use of the word "unearthly".

In other news, all children received a letter this week about RSE. Please make sure you have read this letter and are happy with the content of the lessons.

Also, as the weather is getting warmer (finally!), please ensure your child has a water bottle in school with them everyday. We have a limited number of cups available in the classroom for emergencies but under no circumstances can the children share these.

Have a lovely weekend.

Miss Bairstow (d.bairstow) on: Ash Tree Class Blog 2020-2021

Hi,

We have had a really busy week in Ash Tree and have enjoyed learning about new topics in English and maths.

In maths, Miss Bairstow's group have been learning about angles and Mrs Trotter and Mrs Senior's group have been learning about ratio.

In English, we have been focusing on descriptive sentence starters and will be using these next week to create our own exciting descriptions of an undiscovered Galapagos island!

Enjoy the good weather this weekend!

Weekly Update 28.5.21

Hi,

Another half term over and done with and just one left until the end of the year!

This week, I have been really impressed with the quality of writing in Ash Tree class. The children have shown a real improvement over the last few weeks as they have completed several different pieces linked to our Evolution/Darwin topic. It has been lovely to see them remember and use new vocabulary we have discussed as a class and the effort they have put into improving their work has been excellent.

Here are some examples of our descriptive writing from last week. Each child was given a chapter to rewrite from our class novel, Darwin's Dragons and they worked really hard to include lots of examples of figurative language. Have a read below and see if you can spot any similes, metaphors and personification! They really enjoyed getting creative and designing a background to mount their work on using sketching pencils, oil pastels and watercolours.

Have a lovely half term and enjoy the good weather that's forecast! See you after the holidays for our last half term as Ash Tree 2020/2021!

Miss Bairstow :)

Weekly Update 21.5.21

Hi,

This week in Ash Tree class we have completed some brilliant pieces of writing. We have been rewriting a chapter of Darwin's Dragons with a focus on using figurative language. We are currently in the process of writing up and decorating our neat copies but once they are complete I will share some here. The children have worked really hard on this piece of work and have tried their best to select new and exciting vocabulary.

In maths, my group have been applying all of our knowledge of decimals and solving some tricky word problems. Mrs Trotter/Mrs Senior's group have been learning about line graphs.

We are looking forward to a busy week next week for our final week of the half term!

Miss Bairstow :)

Hi,

It has been nice for us to be back in school this week in Ash Tree!

In Maths, my group have been continuing their work on decimals whilst Mrs Trotter and Mrs Senior's group have been working on angles.

In English, we have enjoyed working on our new class text "Darwin's Dragons". This week we have been acting as authors and have each rewritten one of the first five chapters of the book. We have been trying really hard to improve our vocabulary by using lots of descriptive features like similes, metaphors and personification.

We are looking forward to completing a full week in school next week now we are back into the swing of it!
