Hello everyone,
This week, the children started it by publishing their canopic jars fact file. Then, for our new writing unit, we have started looking at the features of magazine articles, focusing on creating eye-catching, attention-grabbing headlines based around the discovery of Tutankhamun in 1922 and writing statements based on the expert opinions of Howard Carter.
In maths, we have completed our unit of work on shape. We have focused on regular and irregular polygons and understanding the properties of shapes that go into each category or don’t fit in them at all. We have also focused on symmetry and being able to identify shapes that are symmetrical, drawing lines of symmetry within shapes and then completing drawings of shapes that will make them symmetrical.
In reading, we have continued reading our class novel and focusing on a range of reading skills involved with comprehension tasks based around the enxt two chapters that have been read. The children are also really enjoying our story time book, which is Vicky Angel by Jacqueline Wilson. The story has created lots of great discussions amongst the children and also got them making lots of predictions about what will happen next in the story.
In science, we are now working on our unit on forces. The children learnt all about what a force is, were able to identify different pushes and pulls and explain what is happening when someone or something is pushing or pulling someone or something. The children also had an extra bonus task at the end of the lesson to find lots of different things within the classroom that could be both depending on the action used. The children found loads of super examples and were able to explain their thinking clearly using great scientific language.
In art, children have just made a start on their Egyptian death masks and they’re already looking great. They have stuck the face mask and cardboard outlines together, then they have use papier mache and now they have drawn their designs and painted the first layer of gold on them.
In art, the children also completed all of their flower themed art exhibition work. For this, they created three dimensional, carboard flowers, which were in a variety of sizes and colours, using a variety of origami techniques. Well done, everyone!
Take care,
Mr Kyriacou
