Weekly Update 8.10.21

K Simms (k.simms) on: Willow Tree Class Blog

Good afternoon everyone,

Willow Tree Class have been very busy this week! We have been doing lots of arts and crafts including painting our lovely clay oil lamps from Murton Park, thinking about card designs for the school Christmas Card Competition and decorating our own bookmarks to help us keep track of where we are in our Quiet Reading Time books!

We have also started our new topic in maths by drawing bar models on the MUGA in chalk to help us with visualising addition and subtraction. In English, we have been reviewing and editing our recounts ready to write up in neat and add to our Wall of Fame. In PE, we have been practicing our handball skills with Fisical and our teamwork skills with GPLS.

Homework has been sent home today and is due in on Wednesday please.

Children should choose 2 spelling activities from the back of their homework book and use these to practice their new spellings. The English activity involves up-levelling some boring sentences using all the skills we have learnt over the past few weeks, including: fronted adverbials, adverbs, adjectives and conjunctions (in particular, our Golden Word: "because").

Please keep going with your times tables and see if you can earn the Bronze Award before the Christmas holidays (2s, 5s, 10s).

I have set the 2x tables on TT Rockstars and children can access this using the login details on the front page of their homework book.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Simms

Weekly Update 1.10.21

Happy 1st of October everyone!

It's certainly starting to feel a lot more like Autumn now with darker mornings and colder days but here in Willow Tree Class we have still been having lots of fun and learning all sorts of new, exciting things! We have finished our maths topic on Place Value and the children did a fantastic job of placing themselves in ascending order with numbers from 0 to 1000. We created self-portraits using oil pastels and put a Viking spin on them. We have started our new class reader "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes and the children have done a brilliant job of using dictionaries to find the meaning of tricky words and choosing exciting adjectives to describe the "gargantuan, metallic man".

Homework will be sent home tonight and is due back in on Wednesday. This week involves creating a poster for their School Council Campaign, trying out two activities to practice their spellings (these activities are located in the back of their homework books) and trying to beat their scores on some division games... (www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button)

As always, have a restful weekend and please get in touch if you have any questions.

Weekly Update 24.9.21

K Simms (k.simms) on: Willow Tree Class Blog

Hello everyone!

We have had a super exciting week here in Willow Tree Class! We went on our very first trip in Year 3 to Murton Park near York. This was a fantastic introduction to our Vikings topic and the children had a brilliant time getting involved in "all things Viking". We started the day by dressing up in Viking clothes and being given a very detailed introduction by our guide, Astrid. After this, we excitedly walked down to the Viking village that was to be our home for the day and set about completing our activities: baking bread, creating oil lamps out of clay, collecting firewood, farming the land and practicing our marching and charging skills! Things were touch and go at one point when a sneaky Anglo-Saxon invader tried to infiltrate the village but Year 3 rallied together to scare him off by showing their battle faces and shouting their battle cries! The children absolutely loved the day and they represented Rufford Park Primary School extremely well - they should be very proud of themselves!

Please head to Willow Tree Class page to see photos from the day!

Alongside our school trip, the children have had a very productive week in other areas of learning. They have begun to create a recount to describe the educational visit using fronted adverbials, adjectives and conjunctions. They have also shown a secure understanding of 10 more and 10 less than a given number and have begun to investigate what happens to a number when we find 100 more and 100 less than a given number.

Next week...

  • We will be starting our class read - "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes - and we will be practising our Guided Reading Skills through the use of this book.
  • We will be getting our teeth into some fantastic science experiments all linking to our Vikings topic.
  • We will be finishing our work on Place Value and getting ready to move onto Addition and Subtraction.

Homework will be sent home tonight and is due back on Wednesday. Please ensure your child does each piece of work so that they are consolidating their learning and are in with the chance of receiving a Merit point. This week's homework involves reflecting on our time at Murton Park, securing our maths skills on Hit the Button and practicing our weekly spellings.

Times Table Rockstars passwords are in the front of your child's homework book, I have set it to 2s and 5s this week.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Simms
