YEAR 5 DESCRIPTIVE WRITING

We compared different versions of 'Theseus and the Minotaur' by Anthony Horowitz and Vic Parker, before working together to write our own...

OLIVER: Theseus crept forward through the murky maze, its walls were covered in a ghostly green glow. There was no bright sunlight, only blackness! He walked further on, every passage he took led to another and every corridor got narrower and narrower... CRUNCH! Theseus had stood on something hard. He looked down. “Aaah!” he screeched, it was a human skull, and even worse, it had spiders and maggots crawling around inside it.

Just then he heard a whisper: “Athenian turn back...” He clutched his sword! He walked further on and felt a chilly breeze smack his whole body, his spine rattled as he ran like lightning. “Where are you?!” Theseus yelled, and it echoed all the way down the corridor: “Where are you, where are you, where are you?” He heard breathing, horrible breathing, like a bunch of rats scurrying...

ELLIE: Theseus glimpsed a shadow in the corner of his eye, but when he whipped around, it was gone. The scraping seemed to be getting louder. Just then, Theseus heard something breathing behind him. He turned around slowly, standing behind him was the Minotaur! The Minotaur’s teeth were like a lion’s and its fur was sticky with blood. Its eyes were the colour of fire and they were staring straight at him. “So we finally meet,” said Theseus calmly.

CHLOE S: He went charging at Theseus, clawing at his neck like a rampaging tiger. While blood trickled down his neck he leapt forward and grabbed the Minotaur’s sticky fur. The Minotaur threw Theseus into a corner. As Theseus dived to one side the Minotaur grabbed thin air.

BEN: Both hobbling they charged, Theseus hurling himself in the air and landing on the Minotaur’s back. He slit his back! After that he cut its monstrous neck, so its head rolled off. The immense silence of death entered, as the blood of the Minotaur spurted out like a fountain.

SARAH: Then he followed the thread that Ariadne gave to Theseus to get out! He looked at the door, but then just a step away he thought and thought... did he really want to go back to Athens with Ariadne? Yes, no, yes, no... he couldn’t decide, so he went with his heart. He would go with her, but drop her off on another island on the way back!

OWEN: Theseus set sail, but he had forgotten to do one thing: swap the black sail with the white one! When Theseus got back he started waving at his father, but his father was so upset he jumped off the cliff into the swirling water. Theseus turned around and saw the black sail still up. Now he knew why his father had died.
