Weekly Update-6/3/26

Posted: Mar 6, 2026 by: Mr Kyriacou (n.kyriacou) on: Beech Tree Blog

Hello everyone,

This week, in our writing, we have been looking at lots of different persuasive devices which we will eventually be using in our persuasive leaflet all about food waste. We have looked at rhetorical questions, the rule of three, understanding the difference between facts and opinions and using alliteration. The children have been working really hard and are really enjoying working on a piece of writing about an issue that is so relevant.

In maths, we have continued our work on fractions. This week we have looked at partitioning mixed numbers, comparing and ordering mixed numbers, understanding improper fractions and converting from mixed numbers to improper fractions. The children have been working really hard and are making super progress with this unit of work.

In our reading, we have continued to read The Chocolate Touch, which the children are really enjoying. We read a funny chapter this week, focused on retrieval and inference skills, as well as making predictions about what will happen next in the story. We have also continued to read our story time book (I Swapped My Brother on the Internet) which the children are absolutely loving and finding very funny. We also celebrated World Book Day. The children dressed up as characters from books that they really enjoy, we listened to an author read a short story from one of their books and the children produced some amazing book monster drawings as they drew along with author and illustrator Rob Biddulph.

In our topic lesson, we focused on learning all about which part of the world cocoa trees grow in and the growing process of the cocoa tree and the pods that it produces. The children really enjoyed the lesson and we had lots of stimulating discussions about it.

In computing, the children were absolutely amazing! We are continuing our programming unit of work based around repetition of shapes. The children all worked brilliantly together to create an algorithm which would allow their sprite to write the initials of our class. They also showed that they have become so much more confident with being able to debug a line or multiple lines of code which were not allowing the sprite to move in the way that it was supposed to. They also showed their creativity with being able to achieve the same objective by writing alternative lines of code. I was really impressed with everyone, well done!

Take care,

Mr Kyriacou
